Dominic Alldis is making a welcome return to Cranleigh Arts with a new programme called “Two Trios”. The first trio will celebrate pioneers of classical-jazz fusion: Jacques Loussier, Dave Brubeck, The MJQ, and feature jazz arrangements of classical themes by Bach, Fauré, Ravel, Satie, Tchaikovsky, Dvorák, Bizet and Chopin. The second trio will feature jazz guitarist Colin Oxley and celebrate jazz piano-vocal interpreters of the Great American Songbook: Nat Cole, Ray Charles, Shirley Horn and Blossom Dearie. A celebration of four musical legends - André Previn, Jacques Loussier, Michel Legrand and Doris Day, who all passed away in 2019.
André Previn made his name as a superlative jazz pianist and musical arranger prior to his success as a classical musician, most famously as principal conductor of The London Symphony Orchestra. Jacques Loussier took classical music audiences by storm with his jazz interpretations of J S Bach. Michel Legrand was a musical polymath who composed the seminal score for The Umbrellas of Cherbourg as well as "Windmills of My Mind" from The Thomas Crown Affair. Dominic has a particular affinity for these three artists as, like him, they all straddled classical music and jazz. There will also be a homage to the incomparable movie star and singer Doris Day.
